50-100mg once daily for hypertension, 100mg once daily or 50mg twice daily for angina, initial dose by infusion for abnormal heart rhythms, and initial dose by infusion followed by 50mg oral dose 15 minutes later for treatment following a heart attack, with a maintenance dose of usually 50-100mg once daily.

Absorbed into the bloodstream, peak plasma concentrations reached 2-4 hours after oral dosing, minimally metabolized in the liver, mostly excreted unchanged in urine, half-life of 6-9 hours.
Blurred vision, cold hands or feet, confusion, difficulty breathing, dizziness, faintness, shortness of breath, sweating, lightness in chest, unusual tiredness or weakness.
Sinus bradycardia, heart failure, history of heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, hypersensitivity to Atenolol or drug product components.
Do not withdraw abruptly, monitor patients during withdrawal, exercise caution in patients with poor cardiac reserve, first-degree heart block, diabetic patients, history of anaphylactic reaction to allergens, lower starting dose in elderly patients.
Catecholamine-depleting drugs, calcium channel blockers, disopyramide, amiodarone, clonidine, prostaglandin synthase inhibiting drugs, aspirin, digitalis glycosides.
Symptoms include bradycardia, hypotension, acute cardiac insufficiency, bronchospasm. Treatment includes close supervision, intensive care ward treatment, gastric lavage, activated charcoal and a laxative, plasma or plasma substitutes, haemodialysis or haemoperfusion, atropine intravenously, glucagon intravenously, beta-adrenoceptor stimulant (dobutamine).
