1. What is Novo Gold and what is it used for?

Novo Gold is cyproheptadine hydrochloride, an antihistamine used for allergies (dermatitis, hay fever, allergic conjunctivitis), certain vascular headaches (migraines), and as adjunctive therapy for anaphylaxis after acute symptoms are controlled.

In a cool, dry, dark place below 30°C (86°F), out of reach of children.

4 mg tablets in blisters of 10, with a pack size of 30 (3 x 10).

4. What are the dosage recommendations for Novo Gold for allergies and itching?

Adults: 12-16 mg daily (up to 32 mg), starting with 4 mg three times a day or 8 mg twice a day. Children (7-14 years): 4 mg two or three times a day (up to 16 mg). Children (2-7 years): 2 mg three times a day (up to 12 mg). Children under 2 years: No recommended dosage.

5. What is the dosage recommendation for Novo Gold for migraines and vascular headaches?

4 mg initially, repeatable in 1 hour (max 8 mg in 4-6 hours). Maintenance: 4 mg every 4-6 hours.

6. What are the contraindications for Novo Gold?

Newborns/premature infants, nursing mothers, hypersensitivity to cyproheptadine, MAOI users, angle-closure glaucoma, stenosing peptic ulcer, symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, pyloroduodenal obstruction, elderly/debilitated patients, and acute asthma attacks.

7. What are the precautions for Novo Gold?

Caution in children under 2, pregnancy, activities requiring alertness, elderly patients, prolonged therapy, and patients with asthma, increased intraocular pressure, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, or hypertension.

8. What are the potential side effects of Novo Gold?

Drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, hypotension, palpitations, rare blood disorders, dry mouth, nausea, rash, itching, urinary frequency/retention, dry nose/throat, wheezing, fatigue, chills, and headache.

9. What are the drug interactions for Novo Gold?

MAO inhibitors and CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers).

10. What should be done in case of a Novo Gold overdose?

Induce vomiting (syrup of ipecac) if conscious. If not, gastric lavage with isotonic/isotonic saline followed by activated charcoal. Intravenous physostigmine salicylate for life-threatening CNS signs. Saline cathartics and vasopressors may be used. Avoid stimulants.
