Mimics natural steroid hormones, inhibiting inflammation and suppressing the immune system.
Absorbed from the digestive tract, metabolized in the liver, excreted by the kidneys.
Various conditions requiring systemic corticosteroid therapy (rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever, status asthmaticus, ulcerative colitis, etc.).
Adults: 5-60mg/day, single or divided doses (max 250mg/day). Children: Determined by severity and response, not age or weight. Consult a physician.
Not recommended during breastfeeding whenever possible.
Dyspepsia, peptic ulceration, Cushing's syndrome, acne, osteoporosis, mental changes, endocrine imbalance (long-term use).
Caution with osteoporosis, peptic ulcers, psychoses, fungal infections, diabetes, hypertension, myasthenia gravis, ocular herpes simplex, glaucoma, hypothyroidism, tuberculosis history, renal/hepatic impairment. Gradual dosage reduction when discontinuing. Frequent monitoring of drug effects. Caution with vaccinations, immunizations, and skin tests. Close observation of children on prolonged therapy. Safety during pregnancy not established.
Effectiveness reduced with barbiturates, phenytoin, rifampicin. Effects of oral anticoagulants or salicylates decreased. Caution with alcohol, anti-inflammatory medications, cardiac glycosides, ephedrine, heparin, hypoglycaemics.
Dry place below 30°C, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
