Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, and clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from breakdown by beta-lactamase enzymes.
Various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, genito-urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and other infections like sepsis. It's also used for surgical prophylaxis.
Under 12 months: 25mg/kg/day divided twice daily. 1-6 years: 5ml twice daily. Over 6 years: 5ml twice daily, potentially increased to 50mg/kg/day divided twice daily for severe infections.
Allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics and previous Bgclav-associated jaundice/hepatic dysfunction.
Gastrointestinal issues, hypersensitivity reactions, hepatic effects, hematologic effects, and local reactions like phlebitis.
Probenecid, allopurinol, alcohol, and opiates/diphenoxylate with atropine.
Avoid during pregnancy, especially the first trimester, unless essential. Caution during lactation.
