Zinnat is a coated tablet containing 250mg of cefuroxime axetil, a prodrug of the bactericidal cephalosporin antibiotic cefuroxime. It's used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Zinnat tablets should be taken after food. The usual course of treatment is seven days, but it can range from five to ten days depending on the infection. For most infections in adults, the dose is 250mg twice daily. Always follow your doctor's instructions.
Side effects are usually mild and temporary. Common side effects can include gastrointestinal issues, headache, and dizziness. Less common side effects include vomiting, skin rashes, and increases in liver enzyme levels. Rare but serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions, pseudomembranous colitis, and blood disorders. If you experience any troubling side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
Zinnat should not be taken by anyone with a known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics.
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics, tell your doctor before taking Zinnat. Inform your doctor if you notice signs of a new infection while taking Zinnat. Be aware of the possibility of pseudomembranous colitis. If you experience severe or prolonged diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately. If you are being treated for Lyme disease, you might experience the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. Zinnat can cause dizziness. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
Zinnat 250mg is supplied as coated tablets, typically in packs of 10.
Take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Zinnat works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of the bacteria.
Some medications can interact with Zinnat. Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
Zinnat tablets should be stored at temperatures not exceeding 30°C (86°F).
