Liquid Iron is generally well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience gastrointestinal upsets due to iron intolerance. This can be minimized by reducing the dosage and administering after meals.
Each 5 ml contains: * Ferric Ammonium Citrate U.S.P. (Equivalent to 40 mg elemental iron) * Folic Acid B.P. 200 mcg * Vitamin B12 B.P. 3 mcg
At recommended dosages, the side effects are unlikely to be encountered. However, taking large doses can lead to: * Epigastric pain * Diarrhea * Vomiting * Haematemesis * Circulatory failure
Contact a doctor immediately. For acute poisoning, wash out the stomach with a 1% sodium bicarbonate solution and then give 5 to 10g of Desferrioxamine Mesylate in 50 to 100 ml of water by mouth or by stomach tube to chelate any iron left in the stomach and prevent further absorption. If Desferrioxamine Mesylate is not available, empty the stomach immediately by emesis and lavage using 1 to 5% solution of sodium Bicarbonate and leave up to about 300 ml of the solution in the stomach.
Liquid Iron is indicated in: * Iron deficiency anaemia caused by trauma, surgery, hookworm infestation, child delivery, menstruation and dietary deficiency. * Situations of increased iron demand like pregnancy, lactation, growing children, and the elderly with poor iron ingestion or absorption. * Convalescence from prolonged and debilitating illness with symptoms like weakness, lack of concentration, lassitude, pallor, and tiredness. * Anaemia due to febrile illness like malaria, typhoid, and influenza.

The key ingredient, Ferric Ammonium Citrate, is a well-tolerated iron supplement. It provides optimum tolerance and rapidly replenishes iron stores, leading to faster correction of anemia.
* **Folic Acid** aids cell division and the production of red blood cells, including maturation of megaloblasts into normoblasts. * **Vitamin B12** is essential for proper red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. It acts as a cofactor for methionine synthase and L-methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, both vital in various metabolic pathways, including hemoglobin synthesis.
