Each 5 ml contains iron (III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex (50 mg elemental iron), folic acid (0.75 mg), and vitamins in a flavored syrup base.
Iron (III) is actively absorbed, similar to iron from ferritin. This process involves iron-binding proteins and competitive ligand exchange. The absorbed iron is stored in the liver and used to create hemoglobin. It doesn't have the pro-oxidative properties of iron (II) salts and doesn't stain teeth.
Iron deficiency anemia and prevention/treatment of iron deficiency during pregnancy (after the first thirteen weeks).
Adults: 10-20 ml daily (100-200 mg iron). Children (1-12 years): 5-10 ml daily (50-100 mg iron).
Keep out of reach of children. Monitor iron therapy response. Consider additional folic acid during pregnancy. Use cautiously in individuals with a family history of haemochromatosis/iron overload. Overdose can be fatal. Avoid in patients with fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency. Consult a doctor if symptoms don't improve after four weeks.
No interactions observed. Unlikely due to the complex-bound iron. Doesn't interfere with the haemoccult test.
Rarely: gastrointestinal discomfort, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea. Darkening of stool is not clinically significant.
Patients with iron storage/assimilation diseases, hypersensitivity to the active ingredient, haemochromatosis, and iron overload syndromes.
