How is Nystatin absorbed by the body?
Nystatin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is not absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes when applied topically.
What is Nystatin used to treat?
Candidal (monilial) infections of the oral cavity, esophagus, and intestinal tract. Vulvovaginitis and intertriginous dermatitis. Oral candidiasis (thrush) in newborns, especially those born to mothers with positive vaginal cultures.
How is Nystatin Oral Suspension administered?
Infants and children may receive 100,000 units or more 4 times daily for intestinal or esophageal candidiasis. For oral lesions, pastilles or suspension can be used at a dosage of 100,000 units 4 times daily. Higher doses, like 500,000 units 4 times daily, may be needed for immunocompromised patients. For prophylaxis of intestinal candidiasis in patients on broad-spectrum antibiotics, infants born to mothers with vaginal candidiasis receive 100,000 units daily. The formulation should be kept in contact with the affected area for as long as possible, and patients should avoid food or drink for one hour after a dose.

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Oral irritation or sensitization. Rashes, including urticaria. Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Topical use may rarely cause irritation.
Who should not take Nystatin Oral Suspension?
Patients who are hypersensitive to nystatin.
What drug and herb interactions should be considered?
Brewer's yeast may reduce the activity of nystatin. Taking food or drink within one hour of administration reduces the drug's efficacy.
What are the storage conditions for Nystatin Oral Suspension?
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Keep out of reach of children. Shake well before use. Do not freeze.
