What is Ocefix and what forms does it come in?
Ocefix is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic available as 200 mg and 400 mg film-coated tablets, 100 mg dispersible tablets, and powder for oral suspension (100 mg/5 ml).
How should the Ocefix dispersible tablets be taken?
Dissolve the tablet in 5-10ml of boiled and cooled water, stir, and swallow. Rinse the container and swallow the remaining liquid. Use immediately after removing from the blister pack.
What is the recommended dosage of Ocefix for children?
8 mg/kg/day, as a single dose or divided every 12 hours. Children over 50 kg or 12 years old should receive the adult dose. Safety and efficacy in infants under six months are not established.
How does Ocefix work?
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. It is stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes.
What infections is Ocefix used to treat?
Uncomplicated UTIs, otitis media, acute/chronic bronchitis exacerbations, and uncomplicated gonorrhea.
What are the common side effects of Ocefix?
Gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, flatulence). Less common: hypersensitivity, liver/kidney changes, headaches, dizziness, seizures, blood cell count changes.
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of with Ocefix?
Carbamazepine (increased levels) and warfarin/anticoagulants (increased prothrombin time/bleeding risk).
What are the contraindications for using Ocefix?
Cephalosporin allergy.

What should I do in case of an overdose?

Pseudomonas, Group D Streptococci, Listeria monocytogenes, most Staphylococci, most Enterobacter, most Bacteroides fragillis, and most Clostridia.
How does food affect the absorption of Ocefix?
Food delays absorption but doesn't significantly affect the overall amount absorbed.
What is the dosage of Ocefix for patients with renal impairment?
Normal dose for creatinine clearance ≥60 ml/min. 75% of standard dose for 21-60 ml/min or hemodialysis. 50% for <20 ml/min or CAPD. Monitor dialysis patients carefully.
