What is Swidar and what is it used for?
Swidar is a combination medication containing sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine used for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPT) during the second and third trimesters. It's also used with other antimalarials to treat falciparum malaria and has shown effectiveness against Toxoplasma gondii and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
What is the composition of a Swidar tablet?
Each tablet contains 500mg of Sulfadoxine and 25mg of Pyrimethamine.
How is Swidar absorbed and eliminated from the body?
Peak plasma levels are reached after about 4 hours. Sulfadoxine has a half-life of ~200 hours and pyrimethamine ~100 hours. Elimination is primarily via the kidneys.

Use with caution in pregnancy/breastfeeding and in patients with impaired renal/hepatic function, folate deficiency, allergies, or asthma. Hemolysis may occur in individuals with G6PD deficiency. Avoid excessive sun.
