How is Zinc-20 Tablets indicated for use?
Zinc-20 Tablets are indicated for the treatment of acute and persistent diarrhoea in infants and children up to 5 years of age.
What is the recommended dosage for Zinc-20 Tablets?
Children 6 months to 12 years: One tablet once daily for 10-14 days. Less than 6 months: Half a tablet once daily or as prescribed by a physician.
How should Zinc-20 Tablets be administered?
The tablet (or half tablet) should be dispersed completely in 1 teaspoon (5ml) of clean water or breast milk and the entire amount administered orally to the child.
What are some special warnings and precautions for using Zinc-20 Tablets?
Drugs that may inhibit zinc absorption, such as penicillin, sodium valproate, and ethambutol, should not be co-administered with Zinc-20 Tablets unless the risks of discontinuation outweigh the benefits of zinc in treating the child's diarrhoea.
What interactions may occur when Zinc-20 Tablets are taken with other medications?
Zinc may reduce the absorption of tetracyclines (except doxycycline) and quinolone antibiotics. Zinc may also interfere with the absorption of cephalexin or ceftibuten. An interval of at least three hours should be allowed between administering zinc and any of these medications.
What are the potential side effects of Zinc-20 Tablets?
Side effects are mild and transient, including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
What happens if a child overdoses on Zinc-20 Tablets?
High doses of zinc can cause emesis. Zinc sulfate is corrosive at high doses and may cause irritation and corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract, including ulceration of the stomach and potential perforation. Treatment is primarily supportive, but induced emesis, gastric lavage, or activated charcoal may be useful in cases of substantial ingestion. Chelating agents such as disodium EDTA may also be useful under a physician's prescription.
